Twas the night before December and all through the back,
not a creature was stirring, ‘cept a chef who won’t slack!
Each holiday season brings the fun opportunity to get creative in the kitchen and come up with new ideas to share with our guests. Of course, we had to accommodate the nationwide pumpkin craze this fall, but we did it with our own recipe and it was a hit! This season, we decided to mix it up and do something a bit different. Our bakers and chefs asked the question, “What do the holidays taste like?” After a few trials and errors, and some very tasty “almost theres”, the gingerbread bagel had been perfected. It’s slightly sweet, dense, rich, and has the perfect touch of that gingerbread spice.
For the accompanying cream cheese, many suggested the obvious. Eggnog? Vanilla? Cinnamon??
Our chefs laughed and shook their clever heads. We were all intrigued when they showed up at the office with the perfect gingery-brown bagels topped with a bright pinkish-red concoction of cream cheese on top. Gingerbread bagels with Cranberry-Orange Cream Cheese. As we sampled, we knew they’d once again hit it out of the park, and made a bagel combo that Santa himself would be proud of. Seriously, it tastes like Christmas and happiness, and we are very proud to be serving the holiday special at our Buckhead, West Paces, Dunwoody, Alpharetta, East Cobb and Toco Hills locations.
It’s been about three weeks since the series of grand opening events took place at Avalon in Alpharetta. We here at Goldbergs had a blast participating in food and wine tastings, Halloween happy hours, VIP breakfasts and much more. In the days that followed, Goldbergs welcomed more guests than we’ve ever served at any location in over 40 years of business. That’s right, record breaking sales and lines of eager guests have become the norm at our newest location, and we couldn’t be more excited. The full espresso bar has already been extended to accomodate the number of expert baristas it takes to fulfill guests’ orders for gourmet mochas and cappucinos promptly. Our dinner menu has been updated to meet the requests of long-time Goldbergs fans, whether they’re seeking classic deli comfort food or a new spin on dishes they already know and love (think reuben eggrolls and deli nachos). The staff at our Avalon location welcome you to come in and see for yourself. Everything from the decor to the menus will speak to our commitment to maintain our traditions while celebrating our ability to grow and adapt to our surroundings. We at Goldbergs are extremely excited to be a part of this incredible community! Grand opening plans are in the works, menus are prepared and perfected, and the team is coming together to add the finishing touches. We can’t wait to welcome everyone into our NINTH Atlanta location! Heading up that team is Matt Eckardt. Matt is new to the Goldbergs family and has jumped right in, heading up the Avalon construction and carefully planning its opening and beyond. As managing partner, he will be stationed in Alpharetta once the location opens, and we are very glad to have his energy and ideas! We sat him down (not easy to do!) for a little Q and A.
What’s your favorite thing about working at Goldbergs?
It would have to be the people and the atmosphere. There is something always going on and something to do.
What are your hobbies?
I am a HUGE waterfowler. I love going to Arkansas, to the duck club and just spending time with my dogs and buddies. Other than that, it is going to horse shows to support my wife.
What’s your favorite meal here?
I can’t just pick one. My favorite sandwich is a Cali Rueben. My favorite salad is the new Southwestern Chicken Salad (I like to put it in a wrap). Then you have anything that Howard cooks! He is pretty good behind a grill, to say the least.

What will make the Avalon Goldbergs special?
The restaurant and development is just amazing. There is nothing like it in Atlanta. We will also be the very first Goldberg’s, to offer dinner and a full bar. We have spent a lot of time trying to get the right dinner menu and atmosphere for our customers. It will truly be a great experience for everyone!
What’s the most exciting thing about opening a new restaurant?
This whole experience has just been awesome. It’s the first time I can honestly say I love what I do! The most exciting thing to think about, is all of the meals that we will have the pleasure of being a part of. Its where people come to meet their friends and family. We get to be a part of those special occasions and it’s just fascinating to think about. Nothing beats a great comforting meal and being surrounded by the ones we care most about.
Picking up fresh bagels from Goldbergs is always a treat, but how do you make that magic last even longer? Our bagels go quickly, but sometimes you end up with extras, and wasting them would be a crime! Here are some tips and tricks to keep your Goldbergs bagels delicious for days.
Contrary to popular belief, refrigerating your bagels will actually make them go stale more quickly. You should store them in plastic bags at room temperature, or freeze them immediately. Make sure your bagels aren’t still warm when you put them in bags or they will get soggy. When you’re ready to enjoy a stored bagel, dampen its exterior with a paper towel or sprinkle with water and bake at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes.
Another option is freezing your bagels. Frozen, they will keep for 3-4 months in an airtight bag. Don’t forget to pre-slice them! Another “cool” face about freezing bagels: they don’t even need to be thawed before toasting. Easy!
As the Marketing manager for the Goldbergs Deli restaurants, one of the most fun things about my first few weeks here was trying the food. (I can’t lie…it’s a big perk of the job). One day I was sitting at my desk, working diligently as always, and I see something more to my right. Howard Aaron, one of the company owners was standing next to me holding out a plate. (When Howard Aaron holds out a plate in your direction, you take whatever is on it, trust me.)
It took me a second to realize that what I was seeing was actually what I was seeing. It was too good to be true. And yet, there they were, in all their crispy, freshly-made glory.
I looked up at Howard and said in disbelief….”Reuben EGGROLLS?” He smiled and nodded. It was true. And it was delicious.
Over the next few weeks, we would play around with the idea of serving them in the restaurants, but decide to keep perfecting (and sampling) them first. As we planned the launch of our latest specials menu, we knew it was time to start sharing the love. As of Tuesday, our ‘little appetizer that could’ rolled out out at Roswell, and on Wednesday graced West Paces with their presence. By next week, all locations will be serving them up. As a marketer, I couldn’t be more excited.
In the restaurant business, we are always looking for ways to incorporate fresh ideas with the traditions that make us who we are. This is the epitome of that! If it seems like I’m gushing a lot over an appetizer, well, maybe you’re right, but it’s only because it’s exciting to have a lot of buzz over a product you’re proud of, without even having to do a lot of advertising. Yesterday we had a woman drive over an hour and a half just to have an order of our eggrolls. Everyone who’s ordered them so far (and its been a LOT of people) has been tweeting and photographing their dish. They really add something fun to our menu without straying from the quality that we are proud of.
So, to “wrap it up” (bah dum tssss) add an order of Reuben Eggrolls to your next meal at Goldbergs. Try an order to go, and eat them while you watch your Netflix. Have them for breakfast. A few months back, we ran a fun contest via social media that would help us find the perfect name for our cute little previously-nameless “bagel guy”. After tons of fan entries and a thorough staff voting process, GoldiLox came out on top. It’s perfect! Bagels are usually a warm gold color, and we all know they’re better with Lox on top.
Since our guy now had a great name, he was finally confident enough to start going out in public. To celebrate, GoldiLox handed out coupons around town, and even better, started Free Bagel Friday, he delivered (we drove, everyone knows bagels can’t drive) assorted bagel trays to various offices near our Goldbergs locations. There’s not much funnier than seeing an unsuspecting office staff’s reactions to a human-sized bagel coming through the door. (They chill out once they see the free treats). 😉
